When renting a home, one challenge can be making it feel like the space you’re in is 100% yours. Especially for someone like me, who is not very trendy or savvy when it comes to home décor, no matter how much HGTV I binge. Even when I do get the whole decorating thing right, usually whatever I do is out of season by the time I get it done. That’s why I cannot live without the easiest décor piece in my home. This vase/candle combo is the easiest way to decorate for each season with minimal effort.

Step 1 Find a clear vase that has a significant width and a height that suites your space. You want and need outward space more than upward space. Mine is a beautiful vase from Pottery Barn. It was a gift from my much more stylish sister-in-law but it definitely still counts!

Step 2 Get a candle with a smell that you love and could enjoy all year long. I use vanilla for the delightful smell and the neutral color. Your candle should be the same height as your vase but narrower than your vase (see photos).

Step 3 Find your filler! I base my filler on the season and the weather. For example at Halloween, our vase was filled with candy corn. At Christmas time, it was red and green M&M’s. and Now in January when it’s still cold but no longer the holiday season I’m refilling my vase with coffee beans. The smell of the vanilla candle with the coffee beans is so comforting and cozy. It's a perfect combination for this chilly weather. Come spring I plan on using some lush (cough cough fake) greens to brighten up my dark counters. It's all up to you what fits you in your home!
