With more people spending time at home, we’re all looking for ways to keep busy and enjoy the outdoors. Lately, I’ve been finding it challenging to find fresh herbs while visiting grocery stores, so I thought I’d bring the fresh herbs to my home!

Creating a small DIY herb garden is more fun than you would think and can be indoor or outdoor, so it’s perfect for any size apartment!

1. Get the Supplies

You’ll need:

  • Pots or Containers

  • Herbs of Choice

  • Gardening Gloves

  • Potting Soil

  • Tarp (or plastic for easy clean-up)

  • Scissors

Containers are where you can get creative and show off your design-eye! Your local garden center has plenty of great pots and containers to choose from, in any size that will work for your space. You can also use something repurposed, like old tea-cups or a pretty, shabby-chic watering can.

Whatever you choose, keep in mind that you’ll need to make sure the container is suitable for plants or can be modified to accommodate the drainage herbs need. Some containers do not have drain holes, so you may need to supplement small rocks to aid with drainage.

2. Pick Your Herbs

I have a few favorite herbs that I enjoy having on hand: Basil, Mint, and Cilantro. However, depending on the number of pots and containers you have, you can always add others like Rosemary, Parsley, Dill, Oregano, the list is endless!

3. Pair Your Herbs & Set-Up

Not all apartments or homes come equipped with a spacious balcony or large areas, but you can still create a great herb garden by planting herbs together. Certain herbs pair better with others in how they grow. A quick Google search will help you learn and prepare before you start planting. Check out a few of my favorite resources to learn about herb gardening.

4. Finally, Enjoy the Fruits (Herbs, Actually!) of Your Labor

Now that you have a beautiful herb garden, it’s time to use those fresh herbs in your homemade meals and mouth-watering cocktails. Hello, fresh mint mojito!  Fresh herbs make the perfect addition to any meal, add tons of flavor, and are a beautiful garnish to delicious cocktails!
